1995 में अफगानिस्तान क्रिकेट बोर्ड का गठन हुआ । जिसको 2000 में तालिबान आतंकवादियों ने बैन लगा दिया उसके बाद अफगानिस्तान में 2001 में ICC का अफिलियेट सदस्य बना तथा 2013 में वह ICC का एसोसिएट सदस्य बना अपना पहला एकदिवसीय मैच स्कॉटलैंड के खिलाफ सन 2009 में खेला उसके बाद इस टीम ने पीछे मुड़ कर नहीं देखा । टेस्ट दर्जा पाने के लिए इस टीम ने 10 साल का इंतजार किया , टीम को आखिरकार 2017 में आईसीसी की पूर्ण सदस्यता प्रदान की गई ।

भारत ने भी इस देश का काफी साथ दिया । इस देश को खेलने के लिए क्रिकेट का ग्राउंड दिया और यहां तक अफगानिस्तान में एक क्रिकेट मैदान बीसीसीआई अपने पैसों से बनवा रहा है । ग्रेटर नोएडा में स्थित क्रिकेट मैदान को अफगानिस्तान की टीम अपने पहले घरेलू मैदान के रूप में इस्तेमाल करती है तथा अभी हाल में भी बने उत्तराखंड में देहरादून क्रिकेट मैदान को अफगानिस्तान ने अपने दूसरे घरेलू मैदान के रूप में बांग्लादेश से 3 मैचों की क्रिकेट सीरीज खेली जिसमें इस टीम ने सभी मैच जीत कर बता दिया अब ये टीम किसी को नहीं छोड़ने वाली ।
