25 जून एक ऐसी तारीख जिसको कोई क्रिकेट प्रेमी शायद ही भूल पाएगा , क्योंकि इसी दिन तो भारत ने विश्व पटल पर वो कारनामा कर दिखाया था जिसकी शायद किसी को भी उम्मीद बिलकुल ही नहीं थी, लेकिन वो कहावत तो सुनी ही होगी कि कभी किसी को कमजोर नहीं समझना चाहिए और इस विश्व कप में कपिल देव की अगुवाई वाली इस टीम इंडिया ने सबको बता दिया कि आज के बाद हमें किसी से कम मत समझना । 

अगर मैं कहूँ कि इस टीम ने आज के क्रिकेट कि नींव रखी तो शायद गलत नहीं होगा। ध्यान देने वाली बात है कि उस वक्त वेस्टइंडीज, इग्लैंड और ऑस्ट्रेलिया सरीखी दिग्गज टीमों के सामने भारत की स्थिति बहुत बेहतर नहीं थी। कम से कम किसी ने भी फाइनल तक भारत के अभियान की कल्पना नहीं की होगी। लेकिन लगातार मैचों में अच्छे प्रदर्शन के बाद "अंडरडॉग" भारत ने पहले सेमीफाइनल में इंग्लिश टीम को हराया और अगले मैच में इतिहास रचा। भारत की सेमीफाइनल जीत के बाद लोगों ने माना कि टीम भले ही फाइनल में है लेकिन बेहतरीन खिलाड़ियों से सजी दो बार की विश्व चैंपियन वेस्टइंडीज के सामने कहीं नहीं टिकेगी। वेस्टइंडीज पहले दोनों विश्वकप जीतकर अजेय बना हुआ था। उस वक्त विव रिचर्ड्स, गार्डन ग्रिनीज़, क्लाइव लॉयड, होल्डिंग और मार्शल जैसे दुनिया के महान खिलाड़ियों से सजी खूंखार और अजेय वेस्टइंडीज को हराने की सिर्फ कल्पना की जा सकती थी। 

वो टीम जो गयी थी घूमने के मन से 

जी हाँ , इस टीम से किसी को कोई उम्मीद नहीं थी क्योकि इस टीम ने इससे पहले कोई ऐसा बड़ा कारनामा भी नहीं किया था और भारतीय टीम के अधिकांश खिलाड़ियों के मन में भी यही था कि इंग्लैंड का टूर है आराम से परिवार के साथ घूम के आएंगे । शायद आपको जानकार हैरानी होगी कि जब वेस्ट इंडीज़ ने बैटिंग शुरू की तो संदीप पाटिल ने गावस्कर से मराठी में कहा कि अच्छा है कि मैच ज़ल्दी ख़त्म हो जाएगा और हम लोगों को 'ऑक्सफ़र्ड स्ट्रीट' में 'शॉपिंग' करने का वक्त मिल जाएगा। 

सबसे ज्यादा हैरानी इस बात की थी कि इस टीम के पास कोई कोच नहीं था और इसकी ज़िम्मेदारी सीनियर खिलाड़ी मोहिंदर अमरनाथ ने कप्तान कपिल देव के साथ मिलकर उठाई थी। इस टीम के पास कोई फिजियो नहीं था , न कोई डॉक्टर था। यानि कुछ होने पर इस टीम के खिलाड़ी ही एक - दूसरे का सहारा थे । 

खेला होबो 

जी हाँ , बंगाल चुनाव के समय ममता बनर्जी का ये नारा शायद 1983 के वर्ल्ड कप में भारतीय टीम ने उस समय ही सिद्ध कर दिया था। उस समय क्रिकेट में हर मैच 60 ओवर का हुआ करता था । विश्व कप 1983 के अंदर 8 टीमों ने हिस्सा लिया था, या बोले कि विश्व कप 1983 में 8 टीम क्वालीफाई कर पाई थी. सभी 8 टीमों को दो ग्रुपों में बांटा गया था. ग्रुप में इंग्लैंड, पाकिस्तान, न्यूजीलैंड और श्रीलंका की टीम थी, तो वही ग्रुप बी के अंदर वेस्टइंडीज, भारत, ऑस्ट्रेलिया और जिंबाब्वे की टीमों को रखा गया था। 1983 से पहले 1979 के अंदर जो विश्व कप हुआ था उस विश्व कप के अंदर इंग्लैंड की टीम जहां सेमीफाइनल में गई थी तो वही ऑस्ट्रेलिया और वेस्टइंडीज की टीम में फाइनल खेलती हुई नजर आई थी. 1983 विश्व कप में लॉर्ड्स के क्रिकेट मैदान पर 3 मैच हुए थे, टेंट ब्रिज में 3 मैच हुए थे, ओवल के अंदर भी तीन मैच हुए थे और एजबेस्टन क्रिकेट ग्राउंड पर भी 3 मैच खेले गए थे.

कपिल का सहारा , ज़िम्बाब्वे हुआ बेचारा 

18 जून का दिन , बीबीसी की हड़ताल और उस दिन 22 गज की पिच पर जो हुआ वह किसी करिश्मे से कम नहीं था। उस लम्हें को दोबारा नहीं जिया जा सकता। मैदान में जो भी उस समय मौजूद थे, वे आज तक खुद को खुशकिस्मत मानते होंगे। उन्होंने जो देखा वह दूसरा कोई नहीं देख पाएगा। रिकॉर्डिंग पर भी नहीं। अफसोस, उस दिन बीबीसी की हड़ताल थी। मैदान पर कोई कैमरा नहीं था जो उन लम्हों को कैद कर सके। और वह पारी सिर्फ स्कोरबुक में दर्ज होकर रह गई।

शायद ही किसी ने सोचा होगा की अपना पहला वर्ल्ड कप खेलने उतरी जिम्बाब्वे ने भारत को परेशानी में डाल दिया था। भारतीय टीम के 9 रनों पर चार बल्लेबाज पविलियन लौट चुके थे। तब भारतीय उतरे भारतीय कप्तान कपिल देव । लेकिन 17 के स्कोर पर भारत का पांचवां विकेट भी गिर गया । लेकिन आज कप्तान तो कुछ ओर ही सोच कर आया था , उन्होने जब बैटिंग शुरू की तो अलग ही अंदाज़ , एक ही लेवल की बल्लेबाज़ी कर रहे थे, उनकी बैटिंग में एकाग्रता थी , खूबसूरती थी और आक्रामकता के साथ जादू भी था । कपिल ने 175 रनों की जो पारी खेली वह भारतीय वनडे इतिहास में पहले कभी नहीं खेली गई थी। इस पारी ने भारत को भरोसा दिया टूर्नमेंट में आगे बढ़ने का। कपिल की पारी के दम पर भारत ने 266/8 का स्कोर खड़ा किया।

1983 सेमीफाइनल मुकाबले

नॉक आउट मुकाबलों में या फिर 1983 के सेमीफाइनल मुकाबलों में भारत और इंग्लैंड का मुकाबला हुआ था तो वहीं दूसरी तरफ पाकिस्तान और वेस्टइंडीज की टीम आपस में खेलती हुई नजर आई थी. इंग्लैंड की टीम ने भारत के सामने घुटने टेक दिए थे भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम ने 217 रन बनाए और इंग्लैंड की टीम 213 रन बना पाई थी.सेमीफाइनल के दूसरे मुकाबले में पाकिस्तान और वेस्टइंडीज का भी एक रोमांचक मैच हुआ था. वेस्टइंडीज की टीम इस मैच में 188 और पाकिस्तान 184 रन बना पाई थी.

जो जीता वहीं सिकंदर 

60 ओवरों के फाइनल मैच में जब इंडिया मैदान पर उतरी तो यह दिखा भी। लॉर्ड्स में रॉबर्ट्स, गार्नर, मार्शल और होल्डिंग के तूफान के आगे भारतीय टीम ताश के पत्तों की तरह बिखरने लगी। हर विकेट के सतह करोड़ों भारतीयों का उत्साह ठंडा होते जाता। टीम इंडिया ने बल्लेबाजी करनी शुरू की लेकिन शुरुआत बेहद खराब रही और पहला झटका सुनील गावस्कर के रूप में 2 रन पर ही लग गया था. इसके बाद कृष्णमाचारी श्रीकांत ने कुछ अच्छे शॉट खेले लेकिन 38 रन बनाकर आउट हो गए. 

हालांकि उस मैच में भारत की तरफ से श्रीकांत ही सबसे ज्यादा रन बनाने वाले बल्लेबाज रहे थे. वही मोहिंदर अमरनाथ ने 26 रन बनाए तो संदीप पाटिल ने 27 रनों की उपयोगी पारी खेली और टीम इंडिया को 183 तक पहुंचाया. गेंदबाजी की अगर बात करें तो वेस्टइंडीज की तरफ से सबसे अच्छा परफॉर्मेंस सर एंडी रॉबर्ट्स ने किया जिन्होंने 10 ओवर में 32 रन देकर तीन विकेट लिए. वहीं मार्शल और होल्डिंग ने और गोम्स ने दो-दो विकेट हासिल किए थे.

पंजाब के शेर संधू के ब्रेकथ्रू से निकली उम्मीद  

लॉर्ड्स में मौजूद क्रिकेट के किसी भी जानकार ने यह भरोसा नहीं किया होगा कि फाइनल में पहुंचकर भारत, वेस्टइंडीज को 60 ओवरों में 184 रन बनाने से पहले रोक लेगा। लेकिन शायद वो दिन भारत का था। मीडियम पेसर बीएस संधु ने महज पांच रन के स्कोर पर ही दिग्गज गार्डन ग्रिनीज़ का विकेट निकाल कर वेस्टइंडीज  खेमे को तगड़ा झटका दे दिया। भारतीय खेमे में एक उम्मीद की लहर उठ गई। 

भारत से दूर जाने लगा मैच 

1980 के दशक में वेस्टइंडीज की टीम पूरी दुनिया में सबसे मजबूत टीमों में गिनी जाती थी। पहला विकेट जल्दी गिर जाने के बाद दूसरे विकेट के लिए डेसमेंड हेंस और विव रिचर्ड्स भारतीय उम्मीदों पर पानी फेरते दिखे। विव आक्रामक मूड में थे और दूसरे विकेट के लिए बड़ी साझेदारी की ओर बढ़ रहे थे। भारतीय खेमा निराश होने लगा था। लॉर्ड्स में मौजूद भारतीय दर्शक भी विव के चौकों के साथ मैच में किसी करिश्मे को लेकर नाउम्मीद होने लगे थे। इसी दौरान मदनलाल ने डेसमेंड हेंस के रूप में भारत बहुत बड़ा ब्रेक थ्रू दिया और खतरनाक होती दूसरी जोड़ी को खत्म कर दिया।

अंतिम हमला और सपना हुआ पूरा 

रामायण में रावण के युद्ध प्रभु श्रीराम से युद्ध पर जाने से पहले एक गाना आता है याद होगा " यही रात अंतिम यही रात भारी " वो इस मैच में कुछ इस तरह बादल गया था । यही विकेट अंतिम , यही विकेट कहीं पड़ जाए न भारी । जी हाँ वो विकेट था उस समय के सबसे खतरनाक बल्लेबाज़ और जिसको क्रिकेट के भगवान सचिन तेंदुलकर तक अपना आदर्श मानते है , उस महान बल्लेबाज़ सर विव रिचर्ड्स का जो कि भारतीय अटैक के लिए काफी थे। विव पूरी तरह से लय में थे और 42 गेंदों में 7 चौकों के साथ 33 रन बनाकर खेल रहे थे। 

हालांकि हेंस के आउट होते ही मदनलाल ने एकबार फिर करिश्मा दिखाया और 33 रन के निजी स्कोर पर कपिल के हाथों विव को कैच करा दिया। स्टेडियम में मौजूद दिग्गज सन्न रह गए। भारतीय दर्शकों के शोर से लंदन का आसमान गूंज उठा। ये बहुत बड़ा विकेट था। इस विकेट से भारतीय खेमे में उत्साह की लहर दौड़ गई। इसके बाद तो मदनलाल के साथ संधू, अमरनाथ और कपिलदेव ने एक-एक कर वेस्टइंडीज की पूरी टीम को 52 ओवर में 140 रन पर चलता कर दिया। 

वेस्ट इंडीज़ के 'ड्रेसिंग रूम' से आई थी शैंपेन

जीत के बाद लॉर्ड्स की बालकनी पर कपिल ने शैंपेन की बोतल खोली और नीचे नाच रहे दर्थकों को उससे सराबोर कर दिया । लेकिन शायद सबसे मज़े की बात ये है कि कपिल ये शेंपेन की बोतलें वेस्ट इंडीज़ के 'ड्रेंसिंग रूम' से लाए थे, क्योंकि भारतीय खिलाड़ियों ने तो जीत की उम्मीद ही नहीं की थी, इसलिए उनके 'ड्रेसिंग रूम' में एक भी शैंपेन की बोतल का इंतज़ाम नहीं था। इस बात को क्रिकेट लेखक मिहिर बोस बताते हैं, "कपिल देव वेस्ट इंडियन कैप्टेन से बात करने उनके 'ड्रेसिंग रूम' गए. वहाँ उन्होंने देखा कि वेस्ट इंडियन खिलाड़ी बहुत दुखी थे. वहाँ उन्होंने कुछ शैंपेन बोतलें देखीं. उन्होंने लॉयड से पूछा क्या मैं इन्हें ले सकता हूँ? लॉयड ने कहा तुम इन्हें ले जाओ. इस तरह भारतीय खिलाड़ियों ने न सिर्फ़ वेस्ट इंडीज़ को हराया, बल्कि उनकी शैंपेन भी पी."

क्रिकेट बना धर्म 

ये जीत कोई छोटी जीत नहीं थी, इस जीत के 6 साल क्रिकेट के भगवान कहे जाने वाले सचिन तेंदुलकर ने मैदान पर कदम रखा , लेकिन इस जीत के बाद से लोगों का क्रिकेट के प्रति नजरिया बादल गया , इसकी दीवानगी इस कदर बढ़ गयी कि मैच हारने पर टीवी तक फोड़ दिये जाते थे , आज के समय मे टीवी कि जगह मोबाइल और लेपटॉप ने ले ली है। इसके बाद एक से बढ़कर एक खिलाड़ी इस देश को मिले और आईपीएल के बाद तो सबको पता ही है कि किस कदर ये खेल बदलता ही चला जा रहा है , लेकिन इस खेल और 83 कि जीत ने एक चीज़ सीखा दी कि कभी किसी को कमजोर नहीं समझना चाहिए और लगन और हिम्मत और जज्बा हो तो कोई भी मंज़िल हासिल की जा सकती हैं।

But as the saying goes — never underestimate anyone. And in this World Cup, Team India under the leadership of Kapil Dev proved to everyone that from this day onward, we should never be considered less than anyone.

If I say that this team laid the foundation for modern Indian cricket, it wouldn't be wrong. It's important to note that at that time, India's position was not very strong compared to giants like West Indies, England, and Australia. Hardly anyone expected India to make it to the final. But with consistent performances throughout the tournament, the “underdog” India defeated England in the semifinal and then created history in the next match.

After India’s semifinal win, people accepted that although the team had reached the final, they stood no chance against the mighty West Indies — a team of legendary players who had already won the previous two World Cups and remained unbeaten. Back then, imagining a win against a ruthless and invincible West Indies team featuring greats like Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge, Clive Lloyd, Michael Holding, and Malcolm Marshall was a dream.

The team that had gone just with the mindset to explore.

Yes, no one had any expectations from this team because they hadn’t achieved anything big before this, and even most of the Indian players themselves believed that it was just a tour of England — a chance to relax and enjoy with their families. You might be surprised to know that when the West Indies began their batting, Sandeep Patil jokingly said to Sunil Gavaskar in Marathi, “It’s good that the match will get over early, we’ll have time to go shopping on Oxford Street.”

The most astonishing part was that this team didn’t even have a coach. The responsibility of guiding the team was jointly taken by senior player Mohinder Amarnath along with captain Kapil Dev. The team had no physiotherapist, no doctor — which meant that in case of any issue, the players themselves had to support each other.

Yes, the slogan popularized by Mamata Banerjee during the Bengal elections was, in a way, proven true by the Indian team back in the 1983 World Cup itself. At that time, each match in cricket used to be of 60 overs. A total of 8 teams participated in the 1983 World Cup — or rather, 8 teams qualified for it. These 8 teams were divided into two groups.

Group A consisted of England, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka, while Group B included West Indies, India, Australia, and Zimbabwe. In the previous World Cup held in 1979, England had reached the semifinals, while Australia and West Indies had played in the final. In the 1983 World Cup, three matches were played at Lord’s Cricket Ground, three at Trent Bridge, three at The Oval, and three more at Edgbaston Cricket Ground.

Kapil's Brilliance, Zimbabwe the Victim

18th June — a day marked by the BBC strike and a miracle on the 22-yard pitch. What happened that day can never truly be relived. Those who were present in the stadium must still consider themselves incredibly lucky — they witnessed something that no one else ever could. Not even on recording. Sadly, due to the BBC strike, there were no cameras in the stadium to capture those magical moments. That iconic innings exists only in the scorebooks.

Hardly anyone would have imagined that Zimbabwe, playing their first World Cup, would put India in serious trouble. India had lost four wickets for just 9 runs. That’s when Indian captain Kapil Dev came to the crease. But soon after, at the score of 17, the fifth wicket also fell.

However, on that day, the captain had something entirely different in mind. The moment he started batting, it was clear — he was playing on a whole other level. His batting showed intense focus, elegance, aggression, and magic. Kapil scored an unbeaten 175 — an innings unlike anything ever seen before in Indian ODI history. It gave the team the belief that they could go further in the tournament. Riding on Kapil’s innings, India posted a total of 266/8.

1983 Semifinal Matches

In the knockout stage or rather the semifinals of the 1983 World Cup, India faced England, while on the other side, Pakistan played against West Indies. The England team surrendered before India — the Indian cricket team scored 217 runs, and England managed only 213 runs in reply.

The second semifinal between Pakistan and West Indies was also a thrilling contest. In that match, West Indies scored 188 runs, while Pakistan fell just short, scoring 184 runs.

In the 60-over final match, this phrase proved to be true. When India stepped onto the field at Lord’s, it was evident. Against the fiery pace attack of Roberts, Garner, Marshall, and Holding, the Indian batting line-up started collapsing like a house of cards. With every wicket that fell, the hopes of millions of Indians began to fade.

Team India started their innings, but it was a dreadful beginning — the first blow came in the form of Sunil Gavaskar’s dismissal at just 2 runs. After that, Krishnamachari Srikkanth played some fine shots but was dismissed after scoring 38 runs.

In fact, Srikkanth turned out to be India’s highest scorer in that match. Mohinder Amarnath contributed 26 runs, while Sandeep Patil played a useful knock of 27, helping Team India reach a total of 183.Talking about bowling, West Indies’ best performer was Sir Andy Roberts, who took 3 wickets for 32 runs in his 10 overs. Marshall, Holding, and Gomes took two wickets each.

A Ray of Hope Sparked by the Breakthrough from Punjab’s Lion, Sandhu

No cricket expert present at Lord’s would have believed that India could stop the mighty West Indies from chasing 184 runs in a 60-over final. But perhaps, that day belonged to India. Medium pacer Balwinder Singh Sandhu delivered a massive blow to the West Indies camp by dismissing the legendary Gordon Greenidge when the team’s score was just five.This early breakthrough ignited a wave of hope in the Indian camp.

The Match Began Slipping Away from India

In the 1980s, the West Indies team was considered one of the strongest sides in the world. After losing an early wicket, Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards started to crush Indian hopes with their partnership for the second wicket. Viv was in an aggressive mood and was building a solid stand, inching closer to taking the game away from India.

The Indian camp began to lose hope, and even the Indian fans present at Lord’s started giving up on a miracle as Viv’s boundaries kept flowing. But then, Madan Lal delivered a crucial breakthrough for India by dismissing Desmond Haynes, breaking the dangerous partnership and reigniting hope for millions.

The Final Blow and the Dream Fulfilled

In the Ramayana, before Ravan goes to war with Lord Ram, there’s a song that plays: "Yahi raat antim, yahi raat bhaari." In this match, that sentiment transformed into something like — "This could be the final wicket, may it not become a burden." And yes, that crucial wicket was of none other than the most dangerous batsman of that time — the legendary Sir Viv Richards — whom even the 'God of Cricket' Sachin Tendulkar considers his idol.

Viv was in full flow, batting confidently at 33 runs off 42 balls with 7 boundaries, posing a serious threat to India’s attack. However, just after Haynes got out, Madan Lal worked his magic once again. He tempted Viv Richards into a mistimed shot, and Kapil Dev took a stunning running catch, dismissing him for 33. The legends present in the stadium were stunned. The roar of Indian fans echoed through the London skies.

It was a massive wicket, and with it, a wave of energy surged through the Indian camp. After that, Madan Lal, along with Sandhu, Amarnath, and Kapil Dev, dismantled the rest of the West Indies batting line-up, bowling them out for just 140 runs in 52 overs.

The Champagne Came from the West Indies' Dressing Room

After the historic win, Kapil Dev stood on the Lord’s balcony, popped a champagne bottle, and sprayed it over the jubilant crowd dancing below. But perhaps the most amusing part of the story is that the champagne bottles were brought from the West Indies’ dressing room — because the Indian players hadn’t even imagined they would win, and so, there was no champagne arranged in their own dressing room.

As cricket writer Mihir Bose recounts:
“Kapil Dev had gone to the West Indian dressing room to speak with their captain. There, he noticed how dejected the West Indies players were. He also saw a few champagne bottles lying there. He asked Clive Lloyd, ‘Can I take these?’ Lloyd replied, ‘Go ahead, take them.’”

And just like that, the Indian team not only defeated the West Indies — they also ended up celebrating with their champagne.

Cricket Became a Religion

This victory was no ordinary triumph. Just six years after this win, the man who would be called the God of Cricket — Sachin Tendulkar — stepped onto the field. But it was this very win that changed the way people looked at cricket in India. The craze for the game grew to such an extent that people would smash their TVs when India lost a match. Today, those TVs have been replaced by mobile phones and laptops.

Following this, the country saw the rise of one great cricketer after another. And after the advent of the IPL, everyone knows how much this game has evolved.

But one thing this sport — and especially the 1983 victory — taught the nation is this: never underestimate anyone. With dedication, courage, and passion, no goal is out of reach.
